When we worked at the donkey rescue, my friend Rachael would mention the five things all animals need in her educational lectures for visitors: Food, water, shelter, vet care, and most of all LOVE.
I agree with Inger, even in my non-official 'rescuer' status, these are the non-negotiable items. The last because you don't know what the background was and L*rd knows they can all use the idea people are not all... poops...
Sorry, just went through a class about our local Livestock Investigation Team, and right now I am sort of ready to bite the heads off a few idiots in our community... :P
