Germany twelve points, Allemagne douze points

OMG, I can't remember the last time I heard these phrases, oh it has been a long time, mostly too because Germany never got 12 points....I am talking about the anunal Eurovison Song Contest, which is held at the end of May each year. It is an annual competition held among active member countries of the European Broadcasting Union. Each member country submits a song to be performed on a live television show and then casts votes for the other countries' songs to determine the most popular song of the competition. This show has been running every year since 1956 and is one of the longest running television programs in the world and also the most watched non-sporting event in the world. Over the years some of the rules for the competition have changed, e.g. in the beginning the countries had to perform  songs in it's mother tongue.
Germany had only won the contest once in, I think, 1982 and it was always very apparent the rivalry between the neigbouring countries like Austria and Switzerland. Each country has to give out points to other countries' songs, maximum of 12 points and the song with the most points in the end is the winner.  In 1974 ABBA won the contest for Sweden with the song "Waterloo" and in 1988 Celine Dion sang a french song for Switzerland and one that Contest. Nowadays most countries choose to sing in English, and for me that was really the downfall for this contest once it change, since I always liked the ethnic diversity of the competition. Well it was brought to my attention through an email from my mom, that Germany had finally won the competition again. Last weekend a 19 year from Hannover placed first in the international Contest. WOO HOO! So of course I had to check it out and post it, so I can watch it over and over again, not that it's that great, it just brings back many memories of yearly nights glued to the television with the entire family. And it has a catchy tune!
Congratulations LENA ! Germany's newest sweetheart! How cute is she?

Well unfortunately that is what happens most of the times, I mean besides ABBA and Celine Dion( who is a big Canadian star) there is really nobody that made it big after that, at least not worldwide. I remember a few of the winning songs, just because they were nice songs, but I bet if you throw names at you nobody would know them lol...
